Southey Community Library is one of these libraries.

We are now a thriving, valuable local hub for the surrounding community and offer a wide range of activities and services for individuals, families and small business.

Southey Library is entirely run by volunteers!

As part of Sheffield City Council’s efforts to reduce expenditure, we were told that we could either staff and run the library using unpaid volunteers, or they would have to shut it down entirely.

Obviously, shutting down entirely would be a real blow to Southey, so we are now one of Sheffield’s ‘Co-Opted Libraries’ in partnership with Sheffield City Council and Sheffield Libraries.

In the past, libraries were all about the book lending but nowadays, we loan out DVDs and music and so much more.

We’re also a ‘Local Hub’ for a whole range of activities  -check out our weekly timetable for details.
